Valfréjus Ski Resort, France

I've visited Valfrejus several times. It has great runs and is excellent value for money. The accommodation is basic but has everything you need. There is a good mix of runs from blue to black so all abilities are catered for. There are bars and restaurants if you want to eat out. If you're looking for a great week of skiing at an affordable price this is an excellent resort.

We booked last minute and got a very good deal half board. A family friendly resort, compact, with a charming village centre. Equipped with the usual bars, restaurants, and a particularly decent local charcuterie and cheese shop, amongst the usual hire shops and gift stores. Apres ski in the pub had a good vibe, we did this a few times before dinner in the hotel, then it was an earlier night for us most nights. It is not as lively as the big resorts but that’s not a problem if you’re into getting up and at them the next day. The skiing area isn’t vast but it is varied, from high mountains, to rock lined mid level runs, with rolling open fields below mid level, with some good off piste and picturesque tree lined final runs down into the resort. The resort is served by a single gondola to mid level, which shoots you up above the tree line, where a lot of runs are concentrated in a big natural bowl, there’s also a good restaurant / bar / cafe there, other smaller ones are available at high level (one does good schnapps). The kids areas are at this mid level, presumably because of the accommodating terrain and good snow reliability. One run is circa 13km long and nearer 18km if you add on the run leading into it from the top. This is one of the biggest drops anywhere I believe, possibly longer than the one from the top of Flaine to Sixt, which is probably the biggest equivalent run we have encountered in the past. This run opened on our last day there, after some good snow fall. We are getting on in years now, skiing into our mid 50s, so the last run of the holiday from top to bottom was one of the most appreciated and enjoyable I’ve had in circa 35 years of skiing, it’s a privilege to gain these sort of experiences. It’s a lovely memorable place, not expensive or flash, it seems to be popular with the French, which we were happy to blend into, I would sum it up as a no fuss, humble but decent resort, for those who appreciate things done simply and well, I would like to go back someday.

A small but friendly resort, some great runs with the best instructors, even with children in tow we had tbe best week!
