Montgenevre is a charming little resort, not very well known so great for those wanting to ski without the crowds. Perfect for beginners as there are long sweeping greens and easy cruisy blues. Not the easiest to get to as there is only a weekly transfer, but car hire is not too expensive and the resort is about an hour away from Turin. Great place for families

In April 2026, I went on my first ski trip ever! I chose La Plagne because the reviews said it was beginner-friendly and a great destination towards the end of the season. Although I didn’t have much to compare it to, this first ski trip was everything I could have wanted. I stayed in a ski-in/ski-out accommodation in La Plagne Bellecôte, which was a lovely place to stay. It offered great amenities and an easy run to the lifts in the morning, along with a pleasant route back at the end of the day. The accommodation also had a great storage facility and even provided fondue kits at reception, which made for some fun dinners. The bars and restaurants on the slopes and in the village were fantastic, offering a wide variety of options to choose from. Although they were a bit pricey, the food made for a great lunch stop. The selection of blue runs was perfect for practising skiing. My favorite was definitely the run that featured a music tunnel. I went with my partner, who has been skiing their whole life, and they thoroughly enjoyed both the blue runs and the broad selection of red runs. This allowed us to have a wonderful skiing experience at our different skill levels. I gained a lot of confidence during the week I was there, thanks to the range of runs available to us. I would highly recommend La Plagne for beginners, and also for a group of skiers who have different skiing abilities.

It's the best of both worlds, really. What you have here is a charming, rustic French village with super restaurants and bars and with local skiing punching well above its weight, that's also linked to the massive Portes du Soleil circuit with over 650kms of varied runs. Want to tootle around sunny, friendly local pistes and stop off for coffee and lunch at a wide choice of scenic restaurants? No problem. But why stop there? Take your mixed-ability family and friends on a circuit from France into Switzerland. The easy connecting lifts aren't super busy and each resort you visit is a delight in itself, from Avoriaz next door to charming villages like Morzine and Les Gets. Don't leave Chatel without visiting nearby Chapelle d'Abondance just down the road to ski Cret Beni - the Spring skiing here is turning back is a joy - birds twittering, one restaurant bar, total happiness. A bit further on Saint Jean d’Aulps has the longest descent in the PDS (7kms), is wonderfully old fashioned and serves one of the best steaks I've had in France (apart from Le Renard in Chatel owned by chef Rob Brown of course). Chatel is great for couples and groups with varying ski skills. And wherever you roam in the Portes du Soleil, you'll find your ski tips turning back to Chatel for its looks, charm and snow quality. No wonder people return year after year.

Me and my partner went to Les deux alps in January of 26 and had the best time. We was quite surprised at how reasonably price the resort was for food and drink, as well as the vast variety to choose from in resort. The two mountains catered for all ski levels and we also got extremely lucky with the weather! Les deux alps 100% worth a visit!!!

My experience at Avoriaz, was amazing went for two weeks and during the first week snowboxx festival was on which I had a ticket too so there was plenty going on. However, the second week was still amazing even without the festival, the follie douce was still packed. The snow was amazing for both weeks as at the top of the mountain and it super easy to ski down to Morzine and over that side, but also the other way to Chatel and Switzerland. The après ski is good not much night life for the evenings, however, plenty of restaurant and bars for the people who want some fun but also want to be up early to hit the slopes. The ability to Ski in and out of the apartment we said in as well was ideal especially for the price for the two weeks, could be on a lift within five minutes. Also a lovely swimming pool with a hot tub in the resort.

Andermatt was a quaint village which also hosted a garrison, it has now been boosted by a couple of large hotels - the Raddisson and the Chedi. The Chedi is the luxury high-end option and the Raddisson is more of an up market business hotel hosting corporate conferences and music events etc. Andermatt is easily reached by Train or car from Zurich. We really enjoyed the train option. The Gemstock is the area of interest for advanced skiers and boarders. The summit is accessed with just two gondola rides from the village. The terrain is essentially Blacks and Reds with plenty of off-piste options. The runs from the summit to the village are steep, fast and fun. At the bottom of the run home there are a couple of small guest houses serving beer and lunch at reasonable prices if you prefer to fuel-up off the mountain. The cafe bar at Gurschen is relaxed and has a great view over the Russi run and is good for some local fare and a beer. The Natschen and Gutsch side, toward Disentis, has more family friendly slopes than the Gemstock area and allows for a tour to a slope-side restaurant or a more sedate exploration of the area. There's even a lighthouse up the mountain for some reason!
